(list followers please accept my apologies for carrying on this silly
thread, I promise, no further replies from me on this topic) but I have to
say this...

I think the idea that a developer can do thorough testing on the machine he
developed the code/scripts etcetera, on as a contradiction in itself.

Nope, I just like testing in my end-user's environment, since that is
where the rubber meets the road. It's not good housekeeping, it's
thorough testing.

So I guess you like having redundant directory structures for other
applications and tools on your computer as well.

I prefer a single directory heiarchy, I guess good housekeeping is just
in
my nature.

I didn't really think this was a big deal. The bundled install does
make you have 2 JRE's, but that's what you have the "Java Plug-in
Control Panel" for. I've never had to "fix a mess". I install the
JDK/JRE, then the J3D-SDK, then the J3D-RUNTIME. Walla. The ONLY thing
I have to watch for is the default install directory of the J3D-RUNTIME.
That's the only thing I believe they should fix.

The real problem is that the JDK install sets off a scripted version of
the
JRE install that puts the JRE in a predefined path, namely 'c:\Program
Files\jdk1.3\jre' regardless of where you install the JDK. If you run
the
add/remove Programs from the control panel and remove this JRE and then
reinstall it using the JRE only install, and specify the destination
directory to be whereever you installed your JDK plus '\jre' tacked on,
you
will only end up with a single JRE location and thus totally eliminate
the
duplicate jre directories.

Darn I'm tired of seeing this same problem discussed over and over
again. I
wish SUN would fix the JDK install so it would script the darn JRE
install
with the user specifed path so every java developer would not have to
experience this constantly recuring shortcoming of the JDK install.

SUN: please either 1)fire your script writer for the JDK/JRE install and
hire a competent individual who will fix this, 2) make the individual
responsible for creating the mess fix it or 3) if its too difficult to
fix,
unbundle the JRE install from the JDK install and just make everyone go
through the two installs individually. !@##$%^&* WHAT A REDICULOUS
AMOUNT OF
GRIEF THIS BUNDLED INSTALL CAUSES PRACTICALLY EVERY JAVA3D DEVELOPER TO
GO
THROUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (sorry for the expletives but this is absurd)

Thanks,
Myron

Subject: Re: [JAVA3D] JAVA3D&&Applets

Sun Team,

Please put a BIG notice about this on the site when people download the
Java 3D SDK so that we don't need to answer this question over and over
and over again.

The simple answer is:
You need to install Java 3D into your JRE.

This confuses a LOT of developers. Java 3D will work fine in your
development environment but then fail from a command line or from an
applet because Java 3D has been installed into the JDK not the JRE.
I've seen a lot of other people answer this question but far too often
they are confusing answers full of paths, classpaths and/or copying the
files manually (and worst of all the registry edit solutions). It
really doesn't need to be that confusing.

Edith, I hope that's enough to get you working. Drew, that should be
your problem too.
