We've done some tests here about the number of simultaneous sockets/threads.
You can easily exceed 300 sockets and corresponding threads. But
performance seemed to suffer pretty quickly.
Again, this is another reason to use UDP in MMORPGs. And if you want to
take advantage of multicasting, UDP is your only option.
If you guys want to really understand the networking issues involved in a
game such as this, I highly recommend this book:
