Hi,  I have been working on a networked tank simulator game using Java3D for quite some time.

I am hoping to complete the project before 2001, and I expect  to be finished with a basic functional view which processes updates through interpolators by Monday, 4th.

I am not a Java3D master, and want to focus on networking and game issues, like timer synchronization, dead reckoning, etc, so if anyone would like to help me sharpen up (especially with lighting and texture mapping) please let me know.

I have just received a sourceforge.net page (project name tankcombat), and I will make all files publicly available, if anyone expresses interested in this project.

the first time I visited Sun, to interview with Patrick McEvoy, around 1983, everyone was playing a multi-player graphical shooter game in Sun OS over the network.  My recollection is that it was tanks in a maze, but whatever it was exactly, we've all seen the genre by now.

it was about as simple as could be -- after all, it was early

all indications were that it was very popular and very addictive, though, and the genre continues to be popular...

forgive me if this has been answered before [though I did search, and the one game site I found referenced is not operational right now, it seems, and required/installed Java 3D beta 1.2.1] ...

... but has anyone built a very simple framework in Java 3D for such a familiar, 'simple,'  multiplayer game?

... and please, please, please remember the word  'simple.'  This game should require Java 3D 1.2, to drive installation of the latest version, but should not overly tax it, imho

A very straighforward game, done right, would still be very addictive, and provide structure for more complicated games to follow....

... and could drive installation, acceptance, and testing of Java 3D everywhere, which would benefit all of us.
