There are a large number of sample programs in the java3d development kit.
You can also download the application programming interface documentation
from the sun site. In the package javax.media.j3d package you will find the
class Transform3D. In this class there is the method lookAt().
I don't think there are any programs which demonstrate the type of thing you
want to do. While it is simple in theory, and while it might be "easy" to
set up scene in a frozen state, to have the movement with the proper range
of motions for the joints, as well as some method(s) to control it will
complicate it quickly. Also, java3d does vertex lighting, so the light at
the end of your arm won't look like a flashlight. First you need somthing
to shine on, something to be lit by the beam. If you want the normal
flashlight "beam" look you will have to simulate that and to do that right
is no easy task. Next you will want the lense itself to glow, which means
you will want the material to emit, which not so hard.
I am sorry to say Java3d has a fairly steep learning curve. Its worse if
you are also new to 3d graphics programming. I found it took me over a
solid month to be able to sit down and write "simple" java3d programs, and
after 7 months I am still learning every day.
There sees to be some urgency to your e-mails. Are you under time pressure?
Is this a class project? How much time do you have?
