It's a long time I'm thinking about this problem. I have some idea in mind
and some (bad) notes on paper. The idea is to scan the image and retrieve
each "area" of the same color, then convert the contours in a set of points
to connect. To build back the image you just draw the contours and "fill"
them with a normal "fill area" algorithm.
The main purpose is to convert simple bitmap images that horribly loose
detail when scaled to enlarge size. I like to write my documents in
lyx/latex but every time I have to put pictures is a tragedy.
Unfortunately now I don't have time to work on it because of the thesis
deadline. After the thesis is finished (BTW, it's completely J3D based)
I'll try to implement this algorithm and I'll put on a webpage next to a
review of the thesis.
