I tried the drivers at the NVidia web site and I could not get the laptop
with the GeForce2 Go chip to work under Windows 2000 Professional....

So, I reinstalled Windows ME and I guess I'll just have to life with it
until Toshiba puts out an upgrade for Windows 2000 Professional.

So, after the re-install of ME, I hooked it up to my network and checked
out some web pages, just to see what the basic image quality is like.

I didn't like what I saw.

I am using IE 5.5 as the web browser. The screen resolution is set to be
1024x768 and True color (32 bit). These are the same settings as my
desktop PC. (Desktop PC has a 15 inch Acer display, same size as the
laptop.)

To my eyes I could clearly see that the web pages I went to looked better
with my Acer display than with the laptop display. For example, on one
site, letters on the web page had a little bit of a white shading (Its not
suppose to, the letters are just defined to be red) and looked a little bit
chunky. Looking at the same web page with my Acer display I couldn't see
the white shading and the letters looked a little smoother.

Also, I ran some javascript animations (swapping jpg files on a web page)
and the javascript seemed to run smoother on my desktop (700 MHz) than on
the laptop (850MHz). I am not sure why. At times during the animation it
seemed like the laptop jumped into high speed just for an instant and then
choked or something.... It seemed like it could go faster but something
was holding it back. (Possibly RAM? 120 Meg on laptop, 250 Meg desktop,
approx.) With a lot of jpg files to cache, maybe the laptop was too memory
constrained?)

Then I installed Java 1,3 and Java 3D 1.2 Beta 2.

First I have to say that the installation of Java 3d was **wonderful**
compared to the last time I installed Java 3D (many months ago.) Download
and click and it was installed!

O.K., then I ran some Java 3D applets.

I was very impressed with the speed. What makes my desktop a little
sluggish the laptop handles with no problems. For the quick little testing
I did I couldn't get the laptop to be very sluggish and "tripping over
itself". A little sluggish as I continued to add more and more spheres and
cylinders, but nothing like what I was dealing with on the desktop.

Java 3D speed, the laptop wins easily. No contest.

Quality of image though goes to the desktop..... but only by a little bit.

Sorry I can't give you frame rates. I don't have code which prints out
frame rates.

If someone has a Java 3D applet that prints frame rates I'll give it try
and report results.
