How do you find out information like this? I've created an application in Java 3D and I get out of memory exceptions. How do you moniter how much memory is being consumed for particular parts of the program? If what's been said today about the memory that a TransformGroup takes is true, then that's probably my problem.

I think you're right, but look - Java3D takes memory twice:
First - when I add Shape3D to BranchGroup
Second - when I add BranchGroup to Universe in first time
and in both cases - about 10Mb.
And if I do
BG.detach();
and then MyUniverse.addBranchGraph(BG); (second time) it DOESN'T TAKE
MEMORY again. Do you know why it is so?
