I've got a FAQ answer for that somewhere, but too tired to look it up :)

Basic thing is - today: no it cannot be done. Immediate future won't
allow you to do it either. Long term - yes: That is what Java3D v1.4 is
aimed at providing you. Timespan? Rough guess is 18 months to 2 years.
