Your starting point is the Raster class:

javax.media.j3d.Raster

This has methods for reading both the frame buffer
and the depth buffer:

ImageComponent2D getImage()
DepthComponent getDepthComponent()

When I used this I was rendering to an offscreen Canvas3D.
I'm not sure you have access to the buffers for onscreen
rendering.
