Java3d Reads & Renders VRML animations ...
Java programmers can extend VRML objects with
Java Objects for games & networked programs
in powerful ways that not readily available to the users
of the old VRML plug-in Viewers.

I've done it, you can too ...

Greetings ...

I've used NCSA loaders, and the old reliable VRML Loaders
developed at Sun and donated to Web3d, and have found the
Loaders from Sun to be most capable ... the NCSA loaders
didn't support texture mapping images or animations if I recall,
though I still use some code from NCSA to create ".mov"ies
from the VRML / Java3d animations ... with the Java JMF
( Java Media Framework ... video & streaming objects ).

First, could you describe ( and even better place on the web ) the VRML
you're going to load & render ...

No point in using the NCSA loaders if they are not up to the task,
the VRML Loaders from Sun may be the better way to go.

There are also some new Loaders currently developement ( x3d )
which may be good enough for what your needs.

  Here are some examples ( VRML, Movies ) ...
in part just to let you know it can be done, and that
I know of what I speak:

  You ~~ CAN ~~ load & render VRML with PROTOs, Sensors,
Animations, Textures ... Web3d's H-Anim Avatars.

  Some books say you can't, you can.

  We've been plagued by bad book & bad information.

   We need & deserve better books, some books are
seriously flawed and we should be avoided ...

  This book is inaccurate, misleading & should be avoided:

" Core Web3d " from Prentice Hall by Aaron Walsh.
  ========== ------------------

  Prentice Hall & Aaron Walsh are aware of the problem
and don't seem to respect Java & VRML developers and
our needs ( and a copy of this is going to Prentice Hall ).

  Web3d's VRML based H-Anim Avatars can be animated
with Java3d and the good old VRML Loaders from Sun
and college teachers and students should look forward to
doing Human Animation with Java3d ( and with Java 1.1 )
on September 1, 2001.

  They can, They Should.

  The only problem is that Aaron Walsh & Prentice Hall
say you can't ... it's not true ... they are not sources of
reliable information.

  Microsoft has already been found guilty of ~~ illegally ~~~
using it monopoly position to destroy competing companies
and technologies ( including Java ) and is planning on
excluding Java from Windows-XP scheduled for an
Octobler release ...

  Java Developers should not delay, we should show
what can do, now, and SIGGRAPH, and on September 1
in schools and businesses and homes across the country ...

and that inclueds VRML Human Animation with Web3d's
H-Anim Avatars which we can do today ...

  despite the false statements from Aaron Walsh & the
books from Prentice Hall.

  For SDK's I mostly use Symantec, and I have and
sometimes use Forte & Borland, currently on Windows
but I'm dual booting with Red Hat Linux 7 and plan to
go Linux full time when AMD gets down to 13 Microns.

  At long last ... the Advantages of Java and Networking
are becoming realized by those zapped by viruses and the
other problems of the old, tire, closed, tethered desktop.

Now we can play games on the Web, like Chess & Darts,
safely, in a browser, without plug-ins, on Macintosh & Linux
and other OSes ... with Java & VRML.

Web Games: Chess & Darts with H-Anim Avatars.

  False statements hurt us and should not be acceptable, that
they are accepted by large universities, some publishers,
and the National Science Foundation is a shame, and a travesty.

We should not accept that, and I will not.

  Aaron, you can ban me from the mpeg-4 group: you're still wrong.

  Publishing False Statements to techies in the internet era is bad
business.

  Java Developers aren't limited to the desktop or by crappy books.

~~~ Prentice Hall ~~~  Please Reply :
You have already been non responsive to my
phone calls that alerted you to this problem:
Aaron Walsh gets it wrong ~~ AGAIN ~~
  The "Core Web3d" book from Prentice Hall
appears to incorrectly state that the VRML Loaders
developed at Sun and donated to Web3d fail:
| The "Human.wrl" file uses the naming convention
| of the H-Anim standard. However, it does _NOT_
| use PROTOs from that specification.
|
| This is because of some limitations in the VRML-97
| class library which causes the joint centers to be in the
| wrong loncation.
|
| Future versions of the class libarary may correct this
| problem ...
|
  from the Prentice Hall book "Core Web3d" ( p.658 )
You can animate Web3d's H-Anim Avatars with Java3d:
