On the j3d.org website, we have a page dedicated to documenting the
differences between Java 3D OpenGL vs DirectX at:

Simple summary: If your video card has good OpenGL support you'll
probably see a performance advantage of about 30% depending on the
scene. For laptops and video cards without good OpenGL support DirectX
might be your best choice.
