At JavaOne, I spoke with some of the Java/OS X guys in the Apple booth. I
commended them for including a modern JVM in OS X. Then I specifically
asked if OS X was going to support Java3D, and he gave a definate yes. He
said that they even had it running on a single machine at apple (sounded
like they had to do some serious voodoo to get it to work). But then he
reiterated that before they do Java3D they needed to get the rest of the
stuff in OS X up to speed. I think the guy I spoke with also mentioned
something about licencing costs or something...can't exactly remember.
My take is that they are teetering on if they should support Java3D or not,
given that they have not made any public announcements. I feel that it is
important for us to let Apple know, in a kind but convincing way, that we
would like to see Java3D on OS X. Maybe we need a slogan that says
something to the effect of:
"Apple: If you support Java3D in OS X, I'll buy a new Mac."
I mean that literally myself.
It would seem that Sun would also have an interest in this happening.
Consider the alternative, MS is going to fight Sun all the way, whereas
Apple is shipping JDK 1.3...just imagine what it would be like if an updated
version of OS X had Java3D installed by default! It can happen.
Who do we talk to? Who do we email and let them know?
