I think there is no real alternative which gives the same flexibilty as
Java3D does and still can operate on Webpages okay maybe besides
Offscreen-Rendering on server side. Things which go in the same direction
but are not as flexible are maybe:
Shout3D (Also Java based)
Cult3D
WildTangent
Shockwave3D
Anfy3D (but only software rendering and works only with JDK1.1x)
VRML (close to non-existent)
Atmosphere
And the makers of Heidi (the API which was used in 3d Studio Max) had
something interesting
