We definitely need clarification on this issue too. We have to run Java3D within the applet environment, not application. We would like to bundle Java3D with our client distribution and, in fact, that would be the easiest thing to do for us. However applet security restriction require Java3D jar-files to be in the lib/ext directory of the running JVM (because they are unsigned and because they load dlls). Does it mean the we can break Sun's installer and install jars to lib/ext without officially registering the installation? Other applications would still be able to use it but there is simply no other way to bundle Java3D in.

If I understood yesterday's post from Doug Twilleager correctly this is illegal. They need to do reverse IP check before installing Java3D. I don't think we have legal rights to do that even if we do that.

Again this needs support from Sun because of legal issues. You have to specify Sun server in your scripts. Is it possible to run WebStart from the applet environment?

Subject: [JAVA3D] Licensing Clarification needed

Hi All,

I need some confirmation that I have understood the licensing terms
correctly, before we drop Java 3D for our biological imaging
application.  I think the following 2 conditions mean we cannot use
Java 3D -

We cannot include the sun license with our program as we use the LGPL.

We cannot expect the users to install it themselves as they are mainly
non-computer literate biologists who have enough problems with Java Web
Start.

Please help, as Java 3D is perfect for our application and I would
really like to use it.

Thanks

Hugh
