You can load & render VRML with Java3d and
view the Java3d Scenegraph with J3dTree and
I've done it and recommend it as a good learning
exercise.

  Try Sun's Fly Through Demo too, it lets you load
and view VRML ( and other ) data files, adds lights
for you ( if desired ).

  None of the VRML loaders for Java3d is complete
but they offer portability across Windows to
Linux and high end unix workstations and entry
into the professional markets, applications
and ways of doing things.
