I think that problem lies in other place. I suppose that when there is no rotation interpolator, realtime refresh does not occur at all. It happens only on forced repaint/view transform, because nothing in scene moves. Now, after adding _first_ behavior which runs on every frame, realtime rendering is turned on. This means that java3d is using every possible system resource to get as high framerate as possible, starving other java threads and other os processes. AFAIR, it is covered in Justin's FAQ. I think there is a method on Canvas3D which allows you to set minimal frame time, to make render thread sleep sometimes.
