You ask "are all z-buffers 16 bit". No, they aren't. The problem though is that we can't really expect the end user to properly configure their machine. One of the Sun engineers posted not long ago that the GeForce cards use 16 bit z-buffer in 16 bit color modes and 32 bit z-buffers in 32 bit color modes. But the ATI does it differently. So we might get away with asking our users (insisting) to set their PCs to 32 bit color mode. But as we all know, many users still have trouble finding the "anykey".
