Zak, I'm not totally sure of which problem you're looking at, but Mercator projections 'distort' the view only because the classic problem of how you go about projecting 3D into 2D. If you are placing objects, keep the mentality in 3D (i.e., Latitude and Longitude). If you use those coordinates, objects will always be placed correctly and will size and position correctly on the projection. - Gary Graf
