Unfortunately id doesn't. After running the Config App. it always say:

Starting Out Of Space Version 1.0b...
Initializing Graphics Subsystems.
Loading Config File: /var/home/ole/games/oos/oos.cfg
Error - Screen resolution not provided. Please setup screen to allow a resolution:
1280 by 960, 32 bit color depth

By the way, it makes no difference if I set the resolution to
1280x960x32 or 1280x1024x32, the game always tests against 1280x960 (says
so...) though 1280x1024x32 is my resolution.

It doesn't work if i switch to other resolutions as well.
But these are only the physical resolutions, with X the virtual
resolutions always stay the same if you switch on the fly, in my case
at 1280x1024x32.

I just tested it with your debug printout in GetBestDisplayMode
enabled (config set to 1280x1024x32):

Starting Out Of Space Version 1.0b...
Initializing Graphics Subsystems.
Loading Config File: /var/home/ole/games/oos/oos.cfg
modes 0, 1280, 1024, -1
Error - Screen resolution not provided. Please setup screen to allow a resolution:
1280 by 960, 32 bit color depth
