I hoped I would find my answers on that list...too bad...
Do you have an updated version of the ROAM method in the source code from j3d.org? 
V0.6 is quite old..
I tried your code but ran into problems because I have lots of holes (NaN values) in 
my grid. The grid is also not regular like yours (it is regular (not in real 
coordinates). For each y the real (physical) distance ((y+1)-y) varies). (For each 
x,y,z coordinate there is a Point3d containing the real world  coordinates).
