I would also like to mention that I feel that Java3D encourages a more holistic approach to performance optimisation in the context of the rest of the software development process.
I say this because I believe that Java3D and its relevant APIs allow cleaner working code to be written, such that the normal software development process can continue as scheduled. Then the system can be analyzed for performance bottlenecks, and they can be cleanly fixed or improved. By contrast, typical OpenGL code, and probably GL4Java code probably suffers from the fact that it is written in a less than highly structured c'ish way. (no effense to c coders, seriously). Perhaps this is simply an argument for more structured 3d software, but it is still relevant.
