couple remarks concerning the trail:
* the writer of the initial question can have 2 ideas:
- he wonders if... : then he needs to know he asked a potential intrusive
question (he might influence himself the answer over time)
- he is a DirectX fan: then, especially in these times, it's a very cheap but
effective way to...
* to the point:
I know both OpenGL and J3D. While many companies might have gone for OpenGL without
making a tradeoff (it requires more energy, but who cares, it's faster and there is
money enough...) in a downturn economy, people might want to trade in some performance
for reduction in labor cost.
Second, J3D has matured over time, which brings it very close to the commercial level
(of course, you need to know for what it is good: you do not buy a truck for speeding
either right?)
Third, with increasing BW, and people downloading GB of MP3's, don't tell me that
downloading J3D is unacceptable (ok, there will always be grandma's around...and for
some people, using a computer is too big of a step to use email. Does this mean, we
should never have had it?) Added to this, what do we expect? People downloading J3D
first, and then waiting for a killer app? Or do we write a killer-app first?
(obviously rhetorical Q)
I think, especially in this time, it's THE time for SUN to boost J3D a bit, and stress
the reduced labor cost...
It would be good though that we see a clear message from somebody with a SUN
signature...
Kristof
PS: We plan on introducing J3D in our company.
