Iam,
Obviously, it could be redone, just using the specs, but i think that then there will 
be problems
if using sun util classes (copyright, licensing...). Moreover, we'll miss the nice job 
of the j3d team for clever
optimisations and such things. Wouldn't that be worse than having nothing, and a 
wouldn't that be a great
waste of energy? We could use that energy to program more and better j3d software, 
instead.
I need portability, and we have to admit that j3d is not that portable. GL4Java is 
said to be stalled, LWJGL
is of no use for me, Magician is also stalled, so only reasonable remaining choice is 
J3D. I would really hate
being forced to do my own GL binding, just because of that stupid platform problem. 
I"ve got better things
to do than reinventing the wheel, as all of us.
