Ian,

I seem to remember that there was a project to build Java 3D on top
of GL4Java called JFreeD back in days of 1.1. I think it died and I'm
not sure what happened to sources etc. Maybe it ran into licensing
issues? Might be worth checking out.

Frederic,

I am also bothered by this. I will not be naive to the fact that there
may be some "political issues" at play here as well. I have heard
rumors
that Apple has a working (perhaps not tweaked) version of J3D on OSX.
(I
dont like rumors either, but I heard a while ago) And this makes
sense,
since porting J3D to an OpenGL platform should not be difficult.

So I do believe that Apple has J3D working.
Perhaps they have been waiting to release JDK 1.4.1.
Now there seem to be no more excuses. If we dont see Java3D relatively
soon (perhaps 2-3 months), then perhaps we should seriously consider
doing
a port ourselves. This would either involve re-engineering it or
reverse
engineering it, pick your poison.

As an alternative, I am also considering adding J3D functionalities to
GL4Java. This would bridge the functionality gap between the two of
them,
while still allowing the developer to squeeze out performance if they
wish. I kinda like that idea also. Who knows.

Annoyed,
Ian

BUMP !!
Anyone at sun has something to say about this? I've been waiting
almost two years for this
to happen. Official propaganda at this time was that Apple was
working on it. Well. They do it
eyes shut, and with one finger, or maybe it was a lie.
If it's not planned, please be honest and say it. If there is a
problem with Apple, go on, say it.
We can lobby them. There are tons of people around that would benefit
from having an osx version
of it. Blackdown people could even port their linux version, if their
license permitted them to do so.
(by the way, you at Blackdown, would you do it if your license did
permit you to do that ?)

Non communication is the worst state to resolve problems. Please,
explain what's happening, we might
be of some help.

I know, I know; No comment from Macintosh about Java3D. Although now
that
Java 1.4 is implemented for OSX, maybe Java3D is next?

Any insiders out there have any good news?

Take Care,
Mike
