For detailed buildings, Java 3D is the wrong place to start in my
opinion. You should look at CAD packages, with an eye on
how to export the results into a file format that can be loaded
into a Java 3D scene.

Building something yourself from within Java 3D is feasible, but
only really practical for simple structures. Of course, you can fake
the structural detail with texturing, but even that is easier
to set up/test inside a 3D graphics package.

The next tricky issue is what "walking around" really means in your
application. For example, will it be acceptable for the user to
walk through walls? Will the user be able to fly, or will he/she
have to walk up stairs, through doors?

The issue is obstacle detection. In that case, it helps to have
a file format for your structures that is in ASCII (e.g. OBJ, VRML)
so that you, or software, can extract coordinate information to
help the obstacle detection code.
