Java3d has served it's users well and new
versions of important Java3d programs will
soon emerge, including the dramatic roll out
of Nasa's Telescience controler for the
Mars Robotic Rovers now enroute Mars.

The Scenegraph and Sun's tools to view and modify
the Java3d Scenegraph, and the examples from
Selman's excellent Java3d book wih his VRML Picking
and Java3d Scenegraph tree viewer and it's
stable, well documented interface are fundamental
Java3d strengths, and the newer, more portable
( supporting the Macintosh, at last ! ) implmentation
will support ( when it's ready for prime time )
those who know how to exploit the power of the
Java3d Scenegraph.

The Xith3d scenegraph closely resembles Java3d's
scenegraph, and the Xith3d community will support
and encourage Java3d users wishing to retain and
transfer their Java3d scenegraph skills and programs
to use the Xith3d tool when and where it's advantages
make the transition beneficial.

It's the same really, except for the differences ;^)

I agree with Josh.
The coolest feature of Java3D is the scenegraph
concept. Scenegraph is very elegant OO way do to 3D,
and there are some cool 3D APIs using it as IDX3D,
Anfy and the upcoming Xith3 (
https://xith3d.dev.java.net/)
Some guys from Sun told us that Sun is and will
continue support Java3D, and also I note there is a
new guy in the support (Chien Yang).

I agree with Alessandro agreeing with Josh.

| The Xith3d project consists of powerful middleware
| consisting of a scenegraph and an extensible renderer.
|
| The goal is to create a lean and performative scenegraph
| and renderer while at the same time allowing for
| extensions and enchancements to all stages of the
| rendering pipeline.
|
| The class node definitions of the scenegraph is
| virtually identical to the Java3D, although it is
| not intended to be an exact replacement.
|
| The scenegraph will have full collision prevention
| and detection, fov culling and a host of other features.
|
| The renderer is designed to be state of the art
| with support for state sorting, transparency sorting,
| shadow volumes, pixel perfect lighting, CG, vertex programs
| and other modern effects.
|
| Xith3d is not designed as an all purpose API and
| there are are specific design limitations purposely
| introduced to ensure that it performs at the highest
| possible rendering speeds.
|
| The underlying API interface is designed to be
| easily portable. Xith3d will provide ports for JOGL
