A couple of weeks ago I went over to one of our clients at North Dakota
State University. The new release of Java3D for IRIX had just been
released, so one of the things I did while there was to test out Xj3D on
their Onyx/Powerwall combo. It worked with barely any changes
(actually, just makefile fixes, no code changes) and I've put some
screenshots up here:

We were quite disappointed with the performance of Java3D on the SGI
box. In some cases my 2 year old laptop was getting better framerates
and in most cases within 10%. :( This wasn't Xj3D's fault though as we
tried running the stock Sun Java3D demos and the results were the same
so there's something seriously wrong internally within the IRIX port of
Java3D. (for reference Performer demos of the same objects were 6-8
times faster in framerates).

This was only a single pipe machine, but that shouldn't make any
difference to performance relative to a laptop. I've heard of some other
issues with multipipe running on an SGI, but haven't had the cycles to
be able to get back with the people involved to see what's going on.
