Hello,

I once created a simulation of streamlines passing over an aerofoil
using VRML and the EAI. That work has long since passed into the realm
of dead links from my undergraduate degree.

I think VRML suffered from a great deal of enthusiasm but a lack of good
authoring tools. Certainly, I think you could achieve most things more
simply using the EAI than you could using VRML's internal event
mechanism (which, only in IMHO, was *really* difficult to use!).

I haven't tracked the progress of VRML for a long time now. When I was
last paying attention, they were making the move to an XML encoding
(x3d) for VRML, which I thought was a very good idea. There used to be
a VRML mailing list (www-vrml), which seems to still be around:
   http://www.web3d.org/cgi-bin/public_list_signup/lwgate/WWW-VRML/
That may still be the best place to ask questions (although obviously
don't go in there asking: "Is this technology dead?", since that's a
sure way to get flamed! :-).

Don't write it off completely though. Depending upon your specific
application, VRML may be absolutely ideal. I think there has also been
some good progress made in the Open Source area since I was last involved.

Jonathan Merritt.

I have seen little evidence of anyone using VRML in the real world for the last 3-4 years. It is
one of those "neat idea, never quite went anywhere" kind of things, as far as I can
tell.

I mean I'm sure it is being used by some people, but by and large it comes across as
cumbersome, hard to use and subject to a dearth of good tools for creating and
displaying scenes.

Although I'm not keen at all, these guys ( http://www.web3d.org/ ) seem pretty excited
about it and I'm sure they spend more time thinking about it than I do.

Subject: [JAVA3D] java3d and EAI

Hi all,

Does anyone have experience with EAI / VRML and JAVA3D? If so, do you think
it's a good technology? Is it gonna be enhanced? Is it the best way to
get/set information from/to a vrml file?

Thanks for your comments,
Franck
