I'm also interested in how Sun's Open Source initiative relates to Java3D,
but it appears a port of Java2 to the Mac is unnecessary.  Here's an excerpt

Yes.  We have been working on this implementation for over two years.
We developed PerkVM in a cleanroom environment, and Sun's new licensing
model allows us to release it under favorable conditions.

Yes.  And it performs much better than previous MacOS JVMs.

So I guess now we're all to wait and see what happens (PerkVM is scheduled
for release in Q1 1999)...
