I don't know why any of us should expect Sun to be thinking in terms of what is best of for Java... or at least a developers version of 'best'. How's this for an analogy,,.
In milking the Java cow they have always been afraid to frighten it. But if they don't take it out and feed it soon, it's going to drop dead. Or maybe some bean counter has decided that doing stuff can't be a good idea in the current financial environment...
