I still really don't get the fascination with removing stuff.

What's missing is an @Obsolete where Javadoc, code completion, etc, hide 
the methods/classes so marked by default.

Any classes marked entirely as such would of course be moved to separate 
compatibility modules in a modular JDK and only loaded when needed.

Removing stuff is fine, but there are few examples (but, yes, there are 
a few) where there isn't a real, substantive cost to existing code.  
Most the benefit of removing stuff would be obtained from simply getting 
it out of the way.  @Deprecated and existing tooling does not do that -- 
we need something that does.
