No, I must disagree with you on this point.

I bought an unlocked Nexus One that I received just over a week ago. I
could not do anything with it until I had gone through a registration/
activation process which included the mandatory opening of a Gmail
account. I don't use this new email account and I've turned off all
synchronisation with it, and I couldn't find a way round this. Having
an already active SIM with data makes no difference.

If I try to delete this account from the phone I am told that it is
required by some applications and the only way to remove it is to
reset the phone to factory defaults... and therefore go through the
registration/activation process again.

So in summary, at least with the Nexus One, you must have, or create,
a Gmail account before you can do anything useful with the phone.
