Exactly what happened to me... very irritating, all of a sudden the gmail account, being the primary (and you can't change it) started showing up everywhere. Of course I removed my personal email address from the account and put a dummy gmail@ address in its place. Re- registering with my personal address I had to go round and re- subscribe to the groups... meh. I'm not a google _hater_ but this just shows everything that is bad about their approach.
My Google shield is about to go up a couple of notches.
