Today patents are only important because the USA is the leading economy in the world, and places without patent laws are either small or unimportant. In a few years before the turn of the decade, China will pass and greatly surpass the USA economy, and funnily enough China does not care about copyright or patents, because they have lots to gain by stealing and nothing to lose if they respect such formalities. In ten years things might be very different as patents and copyright as concepts probably change direction or might not even exist.
