Today patents are only important because the USA is the leading
economy in the world, and places without patent laws are either small
or unimportant. In a few years before the turn of the decade, China
will pass and greatly surpass the USA economy, and funnily enough
China does not care about copyright or patents, because they have lots
to gain by stealing and nothing to lose if they respect such
formalities. In ten years things might be very different as patents
and copyright as concepts probably change direction or might not even
exist.
