It's not a good machine for development, but on the suspend topic, the only machine I've had that does nearly as well as my MBP (work-owned) is my nice little Asus EEE (running Linux). Unfortunately, it consumes the battery in half a day in suspend mode, but it reliably suspends, and reliably wakes up.
The MBP has failed to suspend more often than the EEE, but does so and wakes up quicker. The MBP has failed to suspend maybe 3 times in OS X and 10 in Windows, which is about the same as the ratio of the OSs I boot it into. Everything else just sits there overheating when you close the lid.
