"Worked well" is subjective. I think most Flash/Air desktop apps look
horrible. In addition, nearly all have UI quirks, bugs and various
malbehaviours that you don't find in apps built using native widgets.

Frankly the idea of every app having its own LaF seems like a
nightmarish hell to me.

Most app developers don't have the skills to develop pleasant user
interfaces and need to rely on the OS to help out with that.  Having
native LaF is important.

PS. And I am going to say it. Nimbus is not exactly a stunner looks-
wise either.
