To clarify a few things I think my initial statement was too brash. I

Best for whom? in what way?

My frustration is this. The reaction to pull out of the expert groups
seems to me at least partly reactionary to the way the JCP vote went,

That's exactly right.

Bob Lee nominated himself for a JCP seat to achieve a certain gaol: to effect a change to the terms of usage of the Java specs (in a way that he deems essential for his continued usage of the specs).

The JCP vote having gone the other way (best for Liam, but I'm afraid worst for Bob) Bob declined an invitation to join the Java SE 7 and 8 expert group (because the resulting specs wouldn't be useful for him.)

and this is a sad thing. I cant help to think this based on these two
blog entries. I think if you have this opportunity it is best to
participate in these experts groups as this is the best way to address
any grievances you have.

Again, maybe best for Liam, but (apparently) not so much for Bob.

At a philosophical or long term big picture level, I agree with Bob because I believe in alternative independent implementations without which I can't answer one nagging question:

What do I do if Java is no longer strategic for Oracle (or whomever the than current owner will be (Walmart?))?

But that's not the point of this thread.

Hi Liam, see his later post

pulled out - "In spite of and because of my commitment to Java,
I had to decline an invitation to join the Java SE 7 and 8
expert groups". You must have seen the earlier post and missed
the later post, causing the confusion.

Bob applied to be a part of the JCP EC and he didn't get elected
because he didn't get enough votes.

He was then invited to be part of two Expert Groups for these two
    JSR, which he declined.

It's admittedly a bit confusing, but Liam has been right since the
    beginning about this.
