Correct, you cannot force a rename. On the flipside, you don't have to bother with it either. If you do the usual thing and remove 1 file while adding another, if those files were similar enough, git will pick it up as a rename. The following:
git mv oldName newName is 100% syntactic sugar for: git rm oldName git add newName Yup, you can't force anything this way.
