Starting in 1998, Mc Nealy had only one obsession: kill Microsoft. Everything else became secondary, especially if it was a software project (which have always been secondary at Sun anyway).
I've attended all hands that were absolutely pathetic and unforgivable coming from a CEO. And looking around, I wasn't the only one who was shaking his head in disbelief. Sun started sinking around that time and when Mc Nealy realized that there was no pulling this plane back up, he jumped and gave the controls to Schwartz. Who proceeded to bury the company for good. The writing was on the wall, though: the hardware business is very, very hard to make money off, and only those few companies with actually good CEO's managed to pull it off.
