Christian is completely blind. As part of his talk, he demo'ed the Major League Baseball app for iPhone by swiping through the available UI elements (with VoiceOver on, it reads the name of each widget aloud), selecting a news item, and having it read aloud. He then pointed out that MLB did absolutely nothing to make this app accessible to blind people, that this was the default VoiceOver behavior you pick up for free when using the default UI Kit controls. This is what he was talking about. He also praised iOS support for third party devices such as electronic braille pads, noting that he attended one conference where four blind-and-deaf kids were chatting as a group using these accessories.
>From his session abstract (http://iphonefall2010.crowdvine.com/talks/ 14581): "As Apple, Inc. offers the most comprehensive set of accessibility solutions available today, Chris will use its VoiceOver product line, available on all devices starting with the smallest iPod Shuffle all the way to their high end desktop computers. He will also feature the iPad and iPhone products as they incorporate the most innovative user interface concepts on any mass market devices available today." -Chris On Mar 4, 11:37 am, Cédric Beust ♔ <[email protected]> wrote: > On Fri, Mar 4, 2011 at 4:55 AM, Chris Adamson <[email protected]> wrote: > > I went to a conference session last October by Chris Hofstader (http:// > > iphonefall2010.crowdvine.com/speakers/10842), who heads up GNU > > accessibility for the FSF.
