My point exactly, Windows is interesting because there is such a big
marked to be harvested as well as many attack vectors available. To
imagine that there's somehow no need for an antivirus on Mac is just
silly. In fact, you can find Mcafee and Norton anti-virus in the Apple
store and it seems that Apple has actually (quietly, wouldn't want to
spoil the marketing propaganda) recommended using an antivirus since
2002: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50569
Well, not. I completely disagree.
1. From a user's perspective, the point about relating market share and
virus spread is not relevant. Maybe it's true, but the end point that I
see as a user is that I have less viruses.
2. As a matter of fact, as a user I can use for a long time Mac OS X
without antivirus and have no problems. Please note that the "I" that
I'm referring to is rethorical, because me myself I'm using a mix of
Linux and Mac OS X (the former for work, the latter for my media-related
stuff). On my Macs I _do_ have an antivirus, to be safe. But if you look
at Mac OS X user's forum you see that most of them don't, and they don't
catch viruses with the frequency of a Window user.
3. As the final point, indeed I don't think the market share has any
relationship with viruses. It's one of the technical things I'm mostly
convinced of, because Jobs is a very prominent figure, he's very loved
and very hated and a lot of hackers would gain huge popularity in their
world if they were able to create a massively spread virus.
