My first attempt at programming was a zork-type text-adventure, in basic, on a DEC Rainbow. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I seem to remember the mounting sense of despair as the "if" statements started to pile up to the ceiling, and thinking "there's gotta be a better way to do this..."
