I was in Aspen Colorado a few weeks ago and noticed the brick pavers on the ground had "patent 1901" on them. You know the little paper roller at the bottom of a coat hanger? Patented.
Perhaps software patents aren't any more absurd than they ever have been. Perhaps the whole patent system is a mess? I'm not sure…. To me at the very least, all these software patents should have a lot shorter durations. 7 years maybe?
