Hi Susan,
If you are using Outlook Express,
it sounds like you are in the deleted items folder.
Normally speaking, that is where you would get that message.
The only other message that comes to mind is,
"messages in the collapsed conversation will also be deleted, do you want to
continue?"
You normally only get this message if you choose to delete a message that is
collapsed.
Can you give us any more information that might help us come up with more
answers?

On more than half my emails, when attempting to delete, I get an error sound
and the question: "Are you sure you want to permanently delete these
messages?"

Not in native Windows. There are programs that purport to read what's on the
clipboard, but those that I've checked out have been something less than
great. Search on Google for "clipboard viewer" without the quotes.
