If I might jump in here, try

They often have older versions of software at good prices I might add.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws and Microsoft Word 2007

Hi Victor,
thank you for responding to my question. I now have a much clearer
understanding of what I'm dealing with. I purchased this program for my son
because he needed it to do his home work. He is sighted so this is no
problem for him. When I called places like best buy and circuit city to get
prices for this program I asked about Word 2003, and they told me that they
no longer sell that version. So I have a few choices here I can either
upgrade my jaws, continue using HJ pad for letter writing, or purchase a
copy of Microsoft Word 2003. I'm not sure what I'll do yet, but if I decide
to get Word 2003, do you know where I can buy a copy of that program? Again
thanks for your help!
Take care,
Lisa

  Hi Lisa,

I have a similar problem, or at least, I had a similar problem as you.

I was running Jaws 7 with Xp home, and installed Office 2007 as an upgrade
to my 2003.

If you think the menu items are screwed up, you ought to see how it
displays an already modified document.

According to my brother, 2007 displays almost like Internet Explorer 7,
with tabs and the like to navigate between multiple documents.

If you use the classic shortcut keys, such as alt-F or alt-T or other
shortcut keys that you use to access the old menu bars, you'll find that
they do work, however, they open a new set of menus.

The menus, as you've already heard, have been completely re-designed and
are called a ribbon, or an information ribbon, so some such name like that.

In any case, when I opened an already modified document, such as a user's
manual for my MP3 player, it displayed the multiple pages side by side, and
when I used the arrow keys to go through the document, it would read the
information on both sides of the window.

So, if the first line on page 1 was hello, and the first line on page 2
was goodbye, when I got there with the arrow, Jaws would read it as hello
goodbye.

Very confusing if you don't know what you're reading.

As I had already read the particular user's manual I opened, I knew what
the first page should say, and was confused when Jaws read something from
page two.

In any case, as was stated on another response to your question, you'll
have to upgrade to Jaws 8 to use Office 2007, or just keep trying to make
the current version of Jaws you have work with it. I wasn't able to do this
and had to uninstall 2007 and go back to 2003.

Unfortunately, I didn't have any time to play around with it as I needed
MS Word for work I was doing at the time, but if I had had more time, I
would have played around with it and tried to see if I could make it work
with earlier versions of Jaws.

The good news is that Office 2003 is very compatible with Jaws 8 and
lower, and I have had no problems using it.

In fact, I think you'll enjoy using it more than HJ Pad, and even more
than Office 2007.

I mean, comparing HJ Pad to Office 2003 is like comparing a farm wagon to
a Rolls Royce, the two are miles apart from each other in terms of what you
can do, but if you just want to write letters and the like, farm wagons
aren't that bad as letter writing goes, but if you can afford it, I would
definitely go for the Rolls Royce.

  Victor
