You are right, Sarah. Now, why does AVG have scanning of incoming *and
outgoing* emails - it won't let you turn off one without the other. If it's
been monitoring your system properly, which it's supposed to do while it's
operating on it, it (the antivirus) shouldn't need to again scan the
outgoing emails composed on that very system as well. What you get is extra
advertising verbiage.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] e-mail scanning

ACutaly many people besides me suggest turning off the email scanner in any
antivirus program. Feel free to scour the news groups
about this, Now maybe I'm going off of old news but I do scann every day at
3 every morning when I'm sleeping. AVG managed to move
one email i never got to the valt from a DBX file, I think. That's the only
way I have found to get rod of the attachment bug that
reers its head every once in a while.
Thanks for saying I'm knoledgible, but i really don't think so. I thnk all
of the people who have helped me learn said knoledge
and I hope to put it to good use some day.

: In a recent message, Sarah mentions turning off the e-mail scanning
: feature of AVG. She indicated that the computer would scan
: everything every day anyhow. I am a bit concerned about the
: recommendation.
:
: 1. To assume that everyone has their task manager set up to scan the
: "entire system" every day is a dangerous and probably incorrect
: observation. Not every person has the time or inclination to allow
: their AVG to perform that task. I agree that it is a good idea but
: for some, it just isn't practical.
:
: 2. Allowing a vital part of your antivirus protection to be disabled
: is, for most people, an extremely fool hardy thing to do. It doesn't
: take much for something to get into your system and contaminate it to
: the point that the computer might even stop working entirely.
: Believe me people, I've been there.
:
: 3. Sarah is, based on her helpful suggestions and excellent grasp of
: technology and software, a highly competent computer user.
: Unfortunately, not all of us have her expertise. Whereas Sarah might
: catch a contaminated file in time to deal with it, others might not.
: We all can't even begin to compare to her knowledge and ability.
: However, I must raise a serious objection to her last idea. In my
: opinion, based on years of computer operation and many painful
: experiences, no one should ever turn off their e-mail scanning for
: any reason.
: AVG examines each and every e-mail before it is allowed to be put
: onto the hard drive for reading. That may take longer but it's worth
: every second. AVG is, again in my opinion, a very reasonable piece
: of software which works quite well with Jaws. AVG is no Cadillac and
: has very little unnecessary program utilization. Okay, so maybe it
: was originally stolen from other similar programs. For years now, it
: has demonstrated remarkable efficiency in doing what it's supposed to
: do. The original versions might have been derived from pirated
: software as some have indicated, but it has gone far beyond those
: early days.
:
: I apologize for the length of this message but I sincerely believe
: that any part of that program should be allowed to continue to
: function at full capacity.
