Sarah suggested that many besides her have suggested turning off the e-mail scanning feature in antivirus programs.
I think she's right on this. I've turned mine off for years when I used Norton, and I never had a problem. Yes, viruses were caught in time, but they were caught by the main component of the scanner. I'm now using NOD32, and it does such an efficient job with processor power that I've just left the e-mail scanning feature on and in place. But I've seen the exact advice Sarah gave repeated numerous times by many of the experts in the business who claim that the offending file will be caught in plenty of time even if e-mail scanning is off. That's especially good advice when you're using antivirus programs that behave almost like viruses themselves by slowing down the processor, etc. But if you're using a program with a relatively small footprint, it's probably not necessary to turn off the e-mail scanner. At the end of the day, it's just a matter of what you're comfortable with and what risks you're willing to take. At the very least, you ought to be able to turn off that silly announcement that tells people that your software has been checked by such-and-such a program and that it is certified virus free.
