Hi Joanne.

The problem is that typing interrupt is turned off via the KeyPressedEvent
in the Script Manager when you press alt+tab and alt+shift+tab. Typing
interrupt is set to on in the Configuration Manager. Unfortunately, I don't
understand the code in the KeyPressedEvent for this script set, so I can't
help you, but if someone else has an understanding of what the
KeyPressedEvent is doing that turns off typing interrupt when certain keys
are pressed, perhaps he or she would be willing to help you modify the code
to exclude the tab key. Unfortunately, it isn't a problem with JAWS at all,
but rather with the scripts for MSN and the way those are written to handle
keys pressed. It was a wonderful idea to keep key presses from interrupting
speech while one is typing so that the incoming messages are not missed, but
the tab key not interrupting speech can be a pain when attempting to rotor
through the list of running applications, as it renders it impossible to do
it quickly.

This reminds me of a suggestion I've been kicking around in my little mind
for a while for JAWS. Other screen readers, which shall remain nameless,
have a feature called "stutter" or something to that effect. This stutter
feature causes speech to interrupt itself, and it can be turned on or off by
a user for each application. What I would like to see is a feature that
interrupt speech whenever one switches to another application, as with
Alt+Tab. Let's say I have the alt key down and am rotoring through the list
of applications. now I've heard enough about the current one in the rotor
to know that it's definitely the one I want to switch to, so I let go of the
alt key. In JAWS, speech keeps going, and I hear the whole window title
that JAWS had spoken while rotoring through the list with Alt+Tab. Then I
hear the window title again because Jaws has switched to it, and called the
FocusChangedEvent, unless I silence it with the control key. I always
silence it with the control key because I find that it slows me down and
annoys me to listen to that double speaking. Perhaps, an optional feature
in the configuration manager that will turn on and off the ability for
speech to interrupt itself in certain circumstances would be very useful and
helpful. Of course, we wouldn't want speech to interrupt itself all the
time, so this should be a checkbox or series of checkboxes for various
Windows events.

Thanks for reading.

Eric and others, I did check and I have the latest Jaws 8, and what I just
discovered was that maybe it's something in Windows Messenger causing the
problem. Eric is correct in that I am alt-tabbing okay through most things,
but when a message comes to Windows Messenger that's when it acts up and
either won't stay in that particular window or it goes to a tool tip place
instead of the typing window part of Messenger's window. I don't know if
anyone recommends a specific version of Messenger that works best with Jaws
and maybe mine is an older one. But this seems to be where the problem is
when it comes to focus.
