Many laptops use the FN key with another key to turn on or off the mouse pad. For example, Toshiba usually uses FN key with F9. You might check your user manual for the computer for a keystroke. Otherwise, open control panel and go into mouse properties, go to the device settings tab and you can usually disable the mouse pad there.
