I have a number of expensive OCR packages but in all honesty none of them
are as good as the OCR bundled with Microsoft Office. The interface is
slightly cumbersome but the accuracy is great. I was let into this secret by
a supplier who prevented me wasting money on yet another scanning package.

The last two times I have bought a scanner, I have bought the cheapest
Canon, around 60 bucks, and have gotten a copy of Omni Page Pro bundled with
it.
Although Open Book may be slightly better, this approach is 1/10 the cost
and does a more than adequete job. Granted, if I didn't have JAWS, it
wouldn't work for me, but you can cut corners to make what works for a
reasonable price...

Larry, it seems fairly simple to me why this all is relevant.

The most often-suggested O.C.R. packages are incidentally the most
expensive.

For many of us, the math doesn't work out at all. I have a decent income
through being self-employed, but after utilities, food, mortgage, medical
and other continuing expenses, there isn't enough money to a.) maintain JFW,
b.) purchase expensive O.C.R. software and c.) get a PC that is powerful
enough to handle the newest, fully-bloated versions of JAEWS, Windows etc.
etc.

Perhaps my somewhat whining diatribe should have been worded thus:

I do not have money for expensive O.C.R. software. Is there freeware or
inexpensive shareware that will again let me rad my books and
correspondence?
